Why I Did This and What You Should Know

Granted, I never really learned to cook before lactose intolerance joined our family, but when we really couldn't eat cheese sandwiches and frozen pizzas any more, I had no idea where to start. We eat meat, so I wasn't interested in vegan recipes; we eat bread, so I didn't want gluten-free recipes (because, according to the blog world, recipes can't be dairy-free without also being gluten free); and every time I searched "dairy-free" I got 10,000 frosting recipes using soy milk. Thanks, but if the "dairy-free" version of a recipe is substituting soy milk, I could have figured that out on my own.

Then I realized that the problem I had wasn't finding dairy-free recipes, it was dairy-free IDEAS. I'd spent the last 30 years making meals with cheese and well, usually more cheese. I mean, I KNOW that a pot roast doesn't have dairy in it, but seeing that I didn't grow up eating pot roast, I would never think to make it.

It didn't seem like there was a good collection of recipes out there that catered to my family's needs. No matter what happens to me, I realize that someone, somewhere, has probably had the same problem. So I set up this blog to try to share a collection of recipes that meet the needs of my lactose-intolerant family and maybe help yours out too.

I try to find recipes that are dairy-free by design (hey, that's the name of the blog!) as opposed to recipes that try to substitute. Please keep in mind that the recipes here are basically things that my family can eat. They may not be 100% dairy-free. Certain ingredients (e.g. store-bought doughs, choclate chips) may contain dairy products, but they don't seem to bother the people I cook for. So if you're looking for something 100% dairy-free please check the ingredients and nutritional labels. Don't just take my word for it. :)

Enjoy and Welcome!
